The Department of Production Animal Medicine operates from two locations: the Saari estate in Mäntsälä and the Viikki Campus of the University of Helsinki.
The Saari Unit includes study programmes in domestic-animal reproductive medicine and in production-animal disease and healthcare. The reproductive medicine programme covers all domestic animals in its research and education; the production-animal programme focuses on ruminants and swine. One of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital departments, the Production Animal Hospital, is located at Saari. Its operations include hospital, outpatient and mobile clinic services for production animals.
Domestic animal hygiene provides education on the feeding, production environment, healthcare, genetics, welfare, ethology and protection of domestic animals. Most of the research concentrates on animal welfare. The Research Centre for Animal Welfare is a cooperative network of researchers organised by the domestic animal hygiene unit. The unit also directs the nationwide Animal Welfare Researcher School.
