Licentiate of Veterinary Medicine Degree

From the autumn 2005, the basic degree structure of education in Veterinary Medicine has been two-tier. The degree programme in Veterinary Medicine comprises a three-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (180 ECTS) and a three-year Licentiate of Veterinary Medicine (180 ECTS). In order to attain professional qualification, the students have to complete the Licentiate of Veterinary Medicine degree (360 ECTS), the completion of which takes approximately six years. The main teaching language is Finnish.
The studies are divided in three parts:
- the ‘healthy animal’ module during the 1st and 2nd year with studies in basic veterinary sciences
- ‘the unhealthy animal’ module during the 3rd-5th year with studies, and
- the ‘from stable to the table’ module during the sixth year with studies in food and environmental hygiene.
The studies include a great deal of practical training, such as clinical training during the entire fifth year as well as placements as municipal and inspection veterinarians. The studies follow a prearranged plan and include, in addition to lectures, a great deal of exercises and small group teaching. The aim is to provide the students with competence for the veterinarian’s profession, independent work as a veterinarian and continuing education.
More detailed information is available in the study guides (in Finnish).
