Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine
The Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine provides teaching in pharmacology and toxicology, equine medicine, small animal medicine, and clinical diagnostics for students acquiring Bachelor’s and Licentiate degrees in Veterinary Medicine. Teaching and care practices are based on research and scientific evidence in their related fields. Clinical teaching is implemented in close cooperation with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The teaching staff of the Department spend part of their time working at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital supervising the clinical practice of students and specializing veterinarians.
Research at the Department centers on animal health and well-being. Clinical research focuses primarily on diseases and pain relief. More information about the research work can be found on the research website as well as on subject-specific websites.
The Department organizes national specialization education in small animal and equine medicine as a part of Vocational post-graduate studies. Training programs for some of the European Specialist degrees are also underway.
Extension studies are offered in the form of courses and seminars for practicing veterinarians and other interest groups. More information about extension studies can be found on the subject-specific websites.
Laboratory work at the Department takes place in our clinical laboratories. The Central Laboratory offers clinical laboratory analyses for the Hospital and the research staff at the Department and the faculty. The services of the clinical microbiology laboratory are also available to other customers. The clinical research laboratory is responsible for carrying out analyses that support the research at the Department.
